Modern shopping carts, with their less-than-stellar design and even worse reputation, are a bridge too far for many. This reputational issue means that the benefits of a walking lifestyle aren't widely adopted. Enter Joyrolla, a Byron Bay brand passionate about revitalising the granny cart. Their aim goes beyond boosting its street appeal; they envision the cart as a symbol of a return to simpler times. It's not just about the cart; it's about thinking locally and walking more as part of a healthier lifestyle.

While the brand might be bigger than the cart, the Joyrolla shopper is very much the hero of the brand. Founders Alex and Marissa approached Soft Serve with a clear visual and functional concept, armed with strong design instincts but looking for the right partner to navigate product development. Through a deeply collaborative process, together we turned challenges, like achieving the right feel and structure for the canvas bag, into innovation. The cart's flat-pack design, a nod to both practicality and innovation, further emphasized this blend of form and function. The cart's design harks back to the classics of the 50s and 60s, reminiscent of mid-century modernist aesthetics while standing firmly in the present.

Throughout its development, there was a focus on durability, weight, and ease of use and assembly. Additionally, we explored various design nuances, such as organisation, one handed opening, and branding details. The final design integrates a lightweight aluminium handle, durable PU wheels, and a functional canvas bag. Its materials and textures lean towards a natural, utilitarian look, ensuring a seamless blend of hardware and soft components. Notably, every part is designed to be replaceable. A fashionable approach to sustainable urban living.
